Over 6.3 crore businesses are now registered on the Udyam registration portal. Yet many small business owners still lose access to subsidised credit simply because they haven't completed the registration process. If you run an MSME, you must ensure to complete this registration as soon as possible.

This guide will help you understand the complete process of getting your Udyam registration online.

What Is Udyam Registration?

Udyam registration is the government's official system for recognising and classifying MSMEs. It replaced the older Udyog Aadhaar and Entrepreneur Memorandum (EM) systems. The registration is done entirely online and at no cost. A unique Udyam Registration Number will be given to you along with your digitally signed certificate.

The entire system doesn't require any physical paperwork. Instead, it fetches your investment and turnover data directly from IT filings and GST records. For businesses without either of the two, self-declaration is accepted at the time of registration.

One registration is enough regardless of how many business activities your enterprise handles. You don’t need to make separate registrations for different products or locations under the same business.

MSME Classification Table

Before applying for Udyam registration online, confirm which category your business falls under.

Category

Investment in Plant & Machinery / Equipment

Annual Turnover

Examples

Micro

Up to ₹2.5 crores

Up to ₹10 crores

Tailors, kirana shops, home bakeries

Small

Up to ₹25 crores

Up to ₹10 crores

Auto parts workshops, IT service firms

Medium

Up to ₹125 crores

Up to ₹500 crore

Export-oriented manufacturers, pharma units

If your business crosses the limits of one category, it moves to the next tier automatically during your annual update.

Udyam Registration Eligibility: Who Can Apply?

The Udyam registration eligibility criteria are simple and straightforward. The following are eligible to apply:

  • Sole Proprietorships
  • Partnership Firms & Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs)
  • Private Limited & Public Limited Companies
  • Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs)
  • Co-operative Societies, Trusts, and Self-Help Groups (SHGs)

Startups recognised by DPIIT are also eligible. Udyam registration for startup entities works the same way. Retail and wholesale traders can register under Udyam, though they may not access all schemes available to manufacturers and service providers.

There's no minimum business age requirement. Even newly registered businesses can apply, as long as they can provide valid PAN and Aadhaar details.

What Are the Documents Required for Udyam Registration?

The documents required for Udyam registration mainly include:

  • Aadhaar number of the proprietor, managing partner, or authorised signatory
  • PAN card of the business entity (for companies and LLPs) or proprietor
  • Business name, type, and date of commencement
  • Registered address of the enterprise
  • Bank account number and IFSC code
  • National Industrial Classification (NIC) code for your primary activity
  • Details of employees (approximate count)

You won't need to upload or attach documents physically. But if your business has a GST number and has filed ITRs, the portal will get the turnover and investment data automatically. If not, self-declaration can be sufficient at the initial stage, though you'll be expected to update details once you file.

Step-by-Step Udyam Registration Process

Here's how to register for the Udyam certificate through the official government portal:

  1. Go to the official Udyam registration portal. Don't use third-party sites claiming to process registrations.

  2. Click 'For New Entrepreneurs' if you are not yet registered as an MSME. Use the EM-II option if you have an older registration.

  3. Enter the Aadhaar number of the proprietor, along with their name. Click 'Validate & Generate OTP.'

  4. An OTP is sent to the mobile number linked with your Aadhaar. Enter it to authenticate the Udyam registration login.

  5. Select the PAN type and enter the details. Click 'Validate PAN.'

  6. The form auto-populates your ITR and GST data. Fill in any remaining fields for the Udyam verification process.

  7. Review the complete form. Click 'Submit & Get Final OTP.'

  8. Enter the final OTP. Your Registration Number is generated instantly. The Udyam certificate will be sent to your registered email address within a few minutes.

If you know how to register Udyam online, the process takes only around 15 to 20 minutes. No registration fees apply on the official portal. Any site charging for this process is unofficial.

Udyam Certificate Benefits: What You Get After Registration

There are various benefits of an MSME Udyam registration certificate. They are:

  • Cheaper Collateral-Free Loans: With an MSME registration certificate, you can get Collateral-free loans up to ₹1 crore under the CGTMSE scheme. Through this scheme, the government guarantees repayment on your behalf. Also, you can get loans at interest rates up to 1.5% lower than normal.
  • Subsidies and Rebates: You get 50% subsidy on patent registration fees and trademark applications. The amount gets reimbursed through the Ministry of MSME. You also get a capital subsidy for machinery upgrades, as well as reimbursement of ISO certification fees. Moreover, you become eligible for an Industrial Promotion Subsidy (IPS).
  • Protection Against Delayed Payments: If a buyer delays payment beyond 45 days, you can charge interest at three times the RBI rate. This is enforced through the MSME Facilitation Council.
  • Easier Government Tenders: With a Udyam certificate, you can get preference in government procurement. MSMEs get preference and are often exempt from the Earnest Money Deposit (EMD).
  • Electricity Bill Concessions: Registered MSMEs also receive lower power bills with the Udyam certificate.
  • Stamp Duty and Registration Fee Waivers: You can save money when acquiring property or registering assets.
  • Tax Benefits: An Udyam registration for startup can help you get extended tax exemptions and MAT credit extension up to 15 years.
  • Priority Sector Lending: Banks are required to lend to MSMEs, making credit more accessible.
  • Enhanced Credibility: Your business looks more trustworthy to banks, partners, and customers with a Udyam registration for proprietorship certificate.

One of the biggest Udyam registration benefits is access to credit easily. Banks and NBFCs treat this registration as proof of formal business status. This simplifies loan documentation considerably.

Government Schemes for MSMEs: What Can You Actually Get?

With an Udyam registration online, you can get access to several government programmes. These include:

  • Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY): You can get collateral-free loans up to ₹20 lakh for micro enterprises. The scheme is divided into three tiers, Shishu, Kishore, and Tarun.
  • PM Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP): The margin money subsidy of this scheme ranges from 15% to 35%. More support is provided for women, SC/ST applicants, and rural projects.
  • Subordinate Debt Scheme (CGSSD): This programme is available to stressed MSMEs or those classified as NPAs. Promoters can get subordinate debt up to 15% of their stake or ₹75 lakh, whichever is lower.
  • Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme (TUFS): If you have a textile and apparel MSME, you can get funds to buy modern machinery. This provides interest reimbursement on qualifying loans.
  • Women and SC/ST Entrepreneur Scheme: If you complete the Udyam registration process, you can also receive term loans up to ₹2 crore over five years. This is mainly given to first-time women and SC/ST entrepreneurs.

Common Mistakes While Applying for Udyam Registration

The Udyam registration online process is simple, but here are a few mistakes you must look out for:

  • Using third-party websites: Several unofficial portals mimic the official Udyam site and charge fees for the registration process. Always use the official government portal directly.
  • Aadhaar-Mobile Mismatch: The OTP goes to the mobile number linked with Aadhaar, not your current business number. If your Aadhaar isn't linked to an active SIM, the OTP won't arrive.
  • Wrong NIC Code: Selecting an incorrect National Industrial Classification code can misclassify your activity. This, in turn, affects your eligibility. Confirm your primary business activity before applying.
  • Registering Multiple Times: One enterprise gets one registration. Multiple registrations for the same entity create duplication issues. This can complicate loan applications in the future.
  • Not Updating After ITR Filing: The Udyam portal pulls live data from IT records. If your turnover or investment crosses a category limit after annual filing, you must update your registration. Otherwise, you may have to face classification discrepancies.

Udyam Registration vs MSME Registration: What's the Difference?

There's often confusion between the two. The old MSME registration system, Udyog Aadhaar, is no longer valid. Udyam is the current and only accepted form of MSME registration online.

How to Complete Udyam Certificate Download and Verification

Once registration is complete, your certificate is emailed automatically. But if you need to retrieve it later, here are the Udyam certificate download steps:

  1. Visit the official portal and click on 'Print/Verify Udyam Registration Certificate.'

  2. Enter your Udyam Registration Number and registered mobile number.

  3. An OTP is sent. Enter it to authenticate via Udyam registration login.

  4. The certificate is displayed on screen and can be downloaded as a PDF.

Udyam verification follows the same process. Banks, government agencies, and buyers can verify the authenticity of any certificate by entering the registration number on the portal.

If you've changed your business address, mobile number, or any other detail, use the Udyam registration update option on the portal. Log in with your Udyam number and OTP, edit the relevant field, and resubmit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Udyam registration fees applicable on the government portal?

No. The official government portal does not charge any Udyam registration fees. Any platform asking for payment is unofficial. The process is entirely free from the beginning till the certificate is issued.

Can I complete MSME registration online if my Aadhaar isn't linked to a mobile number?

OTP authentication is mandatory for Udyam registration. It will be sent to the mobile number linked with your Aadhaar. If your Aadhaar isn't linked to an active number, you'll need to update that first. Some assisted registration facilities are available at MSME Development Institutes for such cases.

What is the process for Udyam registration for startup entities?

Startups recognised by DPIIT can register under Udyam using the official government portal. Their classification doesn't follow the standard investment and turnover criteria during the DPIIT recognition period. After that, they're considered to be like any other enterprise. Applying early can help you access CGTMSE-backed loans and government procurement preferences.

How does Udyam registration for proprietorship differ from other entity types?

For sole proprietors, the owner's PAN and Aadhaar act as the business identity. There's no requirement for a separate business PAN. Turnover and investment data is auto-filled if ITR filings exist under that PAN. If not, self-declaration is accepted. The process is the same across entity types, but proprietors have a simpler documentation situation.

How do I use the Udyam registration login to access my account?

There's no constant login account as such. Every time you access the portal to view, print, or update your registration, you will have to authenticate using your Udyam Registration Number and an OTP. The OTP-based system replaces a traditional username-password login.

Is Udyam certificate download possible after the registration email is lost?

Yes. Visit the Udyam official portal and click on 'Print/Verify Udyam Registration Certificate'. Next, enter your registration number and authenticate via OTP. The certificate is retrievable at any time this way, regardless of whether you still have the original email.

How do I complete a Udyam registration update if my business details change?

Log in to the Udyam portal using your registration number and OTP. Select the update option and edit the fields that have changed. Annual updates are extremely important because the portal cross-checks your data with IT filings. Without updated records, there can be classification mismatches.

What happens during Udyam verification by a bank or government agency?

The verifying party enters your Udyam Registration Number on the official portal. The screen displays your enterprise name, category, NIC code, and date of registration. No login or OTP is required on their end. This lets lenders, buyers, and procurement officers confirm your MSME status instantly, without contacting you.
